When you are your best self, the possibilities are endless

There is a phrase used in a movie which says ‘When you are your best self, the possibilities are endless.’

When we have high confidence, high self believe, high motivation, it really is possible to achieve anything. How does this work when learning to drive?   When you start driving everything makes you nervous as it’s all new to you. But as you learn the skills your confidence grows. So does your self believe and motivation. Anxiety is normal. It’s who you are, you can’t change it, but you can control it.  How?

If you are working, think about your first day on the job. You were probably anxious, worried about it. But after a while doing it look at where you are now. That anxiety is significantly reduced because you know what you are doing.  Learning to drive and the driving test are the same.

Every student worries about the driving test. Think of it this way.  50% of the test is about your driving. All the work you have put in to drive safely.  Remember, you would not have been put forward for your test if you were not ready!   The test is not about perfect driving but just being able to demonstrate you are making safe decisions and driving safely using all the skills you have been taught.

So what about the other 50%. This is the mental and psychological side of the test that you must focus on.  Remember the phrase ‘When you are your best self, the possibilities are endless’. Anxiety is normal. It’s who you are, you can’t change it, but you can control it.  How?

  • Self belief - ‘I can and will do this’ It’s not ‘I hope I will pass’.

  • Visualise the freedom driving will bring you.

  • Visualise what good driving looks like and deliver that in your driving.

  • If you make a mistake, don’t dwell on it, but move on. It might not be as bad as you think.

If you can control your mind, it will have a direct impact on your driving in a positive way.  Talk to your trainer or instructor about ways in which they can help you. Also, check out our website for top tips on learning to drive, the driving test, and coping with driving test nerves,
