Top Tips for driving in High Wind

 

Driving in High Wind can be extremely hazardous. If the wind is at dangerous levels, give consideration to whether you journey is necessary.  If you do decide to drive, follow the expert tips below on how to plan properly and stay safe.

If you get caught in a High Winds follow these guidelines
  • Be Prepared

    It is possible you will be delayed on your journey, or it will take longer than normal. Prepare essential items such as a good coat, extra warm clothes. Ensure you phone is fully charged. If you are on a long journey, take food and water with you. 

  • Keep people informed

    Let people know when you are leaving, and when you have arrived safely. You can also let people know the route you will take so if you are delayed, or experience an incident, they know which route to take to find you. 

  • Listen to Travel Alerts

    Take notice on social media and local radio announcements to keep you up to date on the weather conditions. this will help you decide if it is safe to travel, keep you up to date on incident on the road, and if any roads are affected by the wind on your route. 

  • Slow down.

    High Wind is extremely dangerous.  By slowing down, you reduce the risk of being affected by car handling and strong gusts which can easily catch you out. 

  • Keep Control

    Ensure you have a good grip on the steering wheel at all times as unexpected gusts of wind can catch you out.

  • Other Vehicles

    Be especially attentive to other vehicles on the road that will also be affected by the wind, particularly high sides vehicles such as buses and lorries.  This includes vehicles coming towards you, not just those infant of you. Ensure you plan well ahead and keep a safe distance. 

  • Reduce your Speed

    This will allow you more time to plan ahead and deal with any issues that arise from the strong winds

  • Debris on the the road

    Keep an eye out for debris on the road. Looking well ahead will help you deal with navigating around any debris you come across. 

  • Be careful overtaking

    If you do decide to overtake, be prepared for a sudden gust of wind as you pass the vehicle. Only overtake if it is necessary.
